Tempered & laminated glass. Built around your project.
Custom glass fabrication for contractors, installers and commercial buyers in South Florida. Start with the application. Specify the performance. Send us your plans.
Controlled heating and rapid cooling create surface compression. Fully tempered glass has greater strength than comparable annealed glass and breaks into smaller fragments when it fails. [1]
Common in doors, shower enclosures and interior partitions.
Finalize cut-outs, holes and edgework before tempering.
Monolithic tempered glass does not provide fragment retention after breakage.

Two or more glass lites are bonded with a polymer interlayer. The interlayer helps retain broken fragments; its type and the glass make-up influence acoustic, structural and other performance. [2]
Considered where glass retention is part of the design.
Options include conventional PVB, acoustic PVB and structural ionoplast.
The assembly may use annealed, heat-strengthened or tempered lites.

Tempered vs. laminated glass: a specification starting point
Consideration
Monolithic tempered
Laminated assembly
Manufacturing
Heat treatment of a glass lite
Bonding of glass lites with an interlayer
Breakage behavior
Smaller fragments; retention is not inherent
Interlayer helps keep broken fragments attached
Sound control
Depends on thickness and assembly
Acoustic interlayers can improve sound damping
Post-breakage design
Requires consideration of the support system and failure condition
Depends on interlayer, lite treatment, temperature and support
Impact / storm performance
No automatic hurricane rating
No automatic hurricane rating; verify the approved system
Selection must follow the project’s design requirements. Glass type alone does not establish compliance, load capacity or suitability for a particular installation. [8][9]

CURRENT MATERIALS & SPECIFICATION PRACTICE
More performance. More precise specifications.
Explore these options with your project team. Product availability, fabrication compatibility and performance must be confirmed for the specified make-up.
Specialized PVB can reduce sound transmission through laminated glazing. Use documented STC or OITC data for the full system rather than a generic “soundproof” claim. [3]
Discuss for offices, hotels and sites near traffic.
Ionoplast interlayers can offer greater stiffness and post-breakage performance than conventional PVB. Engineering must account for load duration, temperature, support and the intended failure condition. [4]
Discuss where structural retention is a design requirement.
Coatings can add solar control or thermal performance to compatible glass constructions. Specify visible light transmission, solar heat gain coefficient and U-factor for the complete glazing unit. [5]
Discuss for South Florida facades and exterior glazing.
Eastman reports 37% lower A1–A3 embodied carbon for Saflex™ LiteCarbon™ Clear versus standard Saflex Clear, using the cited EPD comparison. This figure concerns the interlayer, not a 37% reduction for a complete window. [6]
Ask for product-specific environmental declarations.
Frit, etching, UV treatments and patterned interlayers can help birds perceive glazing. Check the selected product’s documented performance and the project’s visual requirements. [5]
Discuss for transparent facades and exposed glazing.
Agree on visual acceptance criteria for heat-treated glass. Where specified, heat soaking can reduce nickel-sulfide-related breakage risk; it cannot eliminate every potential breakage event. [7]
Discuss exposed elevations and sensitive visual applications.

Specifying impact glass?
Send the applicable Notice of Acceptance or Florida Product Approval, including the approved glass make-up. Miami-Dade’s product-control guidance evaluates components within a tested assembly. [9]
Practical answers for the specification and ordering process.
What is the difference between tempered and laminated glass?
Tempering changes the strength and breakage pattern of a glass lite through heat treatment. Lamination bonds two or more lites with an interlayer that helps hold broken fragments together. A laminated assembly can also use tempered lites.
Can glass be both tempered and laminated?
Yes. These processes can be combined. The appropriate treatment, interlayer and support system depend on the application, required performance and project specification.
Is laminated glass automatically hurricane-rated?
No. Impact performance must be verified for the approved assembly, including its glass make-up, frame, anchors, dimensions and installation conditions. Provide the applicable Florida Product Approval or Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance when requesting a quote.
What thickness should I specify for commercial glass?
Thickness depends on panel dimensions, support conditions, loads, use and applicable requirements. Submit the design specification or engineering details; a generic thickness recommendation cannot establish suitability for your project.
Can tempered glass be cut or drilled after fabrication?
Finalize dimensions, holes, notches and edgework before tempering. Field cutting or drilling is not an appropriate way to modify a finished tempered panel.
Do you work with contractors outside Hialeah?
Lumma Glass’s website identifies Miami-Dade and Broward as its service area. Send the project location, quantities and schedule so the team can confirm order coordination and logistics for your job.
What should a B2B quote request include?
Include your company, contact details, project city, intended use, panel schedule, quantities, dimensions with units, specified glass make-up, edgework, holes and drawings. Add the target date and any approval or performance documentation.
Can laminated glass improve sound control?
Yes, depending on the glass configuration and interlayer. Acoustic PVB is designed for sound damping. Evaluate documented STC or OITC results for the full assembly and the noise conditions you need to address.
