A DECISION GUIDE FOR TRADE BUYERS

Two processes.
Different reasons to specify them.

This article helps you frame the specification conversation. For fabrication services and detailed product options, use our Tempered & Laminated Glass solution page.

01 / PROJECT GUIDE

Tempering changes the lite

Architectural glass samples showing their exposed edges

Controlled heating and cooling produce surface compression. Fully tempered glass has greater strength than comparable annealed glass and a different breakage pattern. It does not inherently retain fragments in the opening. [1]

02 / PROJECT GUIDE

Lamination bonds lites

Monolithic and laminated architectural glass samples

Glass lites are bonded through an interlayer that helps retain broken fragments. Interlayer selection, glass treatment and the support system influence the assembly’s performance. Laminated glass can include tempered lites. [2]

03 / PROJECT GUIDE

Both can work together

Glass edge and framing connection detail

Tempered laminated glass combines heat treatment and lamination. It is a specification choice, not an automatic approval for every use. The design must address loads, dimensions, support and the required failure behavior.

ASK FOR THE REQUIRED PERFORMANCE

Choose by application.
Confirm by documentation.

Thickness alone cannot determine whether a glass panel is suitable for your project.

Questions that guide the glass specification
QuestionTempered liteLaminated assembly
How is it made?Heat treatmentBonding glass lites with an interlayer
What happens after breakage?Fragmentation; no inherent fragment retentionInterlayer helps hold broken fragments
Can it address acoustics?Performance depends on the assemblyInterlayer and lite choices can support acoustic targets
Can it be modified on site?Finalize cutting and drilling before temperingFabrication constraints depend on the full make-up; confirm before ordering
Is it automatically hurricane-rated?NoNo; verify the approved complete system

Heat treatment and lamination answer different design needs. Safety-glazing requirements, support conditions and approved assemblies must be evaluated for the application. [1] [2] [3]
